All About Me

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, I was born... Well. Let's not start with a lie. I was actually born just over the state line in North Carolina. From there, life took me west; by nine months old I was living in the Nevada desert. Growing up in the middle of nowhere leaves plenty of space for the imagination, and I filled it quickly. I won my first writing competition at eight, the same year I published my first poem. By third grade, I was writing the school play—a not-so-subtle satire of our teachers that also required the boys to perform in dresses, since our tiny school had no male staff to parody. Was it a hit? Hard to say, but we certainly had a good laugh at the boys.

From that point on, I never stopped writing. I did, however, stop trying—trying to make it a career, to publish consistently, to force my work to matter. Years later, after having children and realizing I didn’t want them to see me abandon my own dream, I began again. I published several short stories, came close to signing with an agent, and then… paused once more. Trying can be exhausting.

Now, with my children halfway grown, I’m returning to the page with renewed purpose. I’ve found my voice, and I’m not quite the same person I was before—literally, in one sense, as Daphne is a pen name (which explains why you won’t find earlier work under it). My writing leans toward dark, unsettling premises, yet my characters always manage to uncover a thread of hope.

Speaking of hope, I hope you enjoy my stories. Read on.
